In 1839, twenty-two years before the Civil War began, the first practical "sun picture" was made by a Frenchman named Daguerre. The story goes that Mathew Brady, to whom we are indebted for most of the beautiful pictures in this series, having gone to Europe with the inventor of the electric telegraph, Samuel B. Morse, met Daguerre and was so impressed by what he learned that he determined to devote his life to the photographic arts. This is a great example of that art. Compiled from actual photographs taken at the time of action by Matthew Brady and others. |
